Several combinations were put before the commis­sion; one, comprising the then existing organisation and others suggested by Carafa, the director of the Military School of Music, Adolphe Sax, the musical instrument maker, and Spontini.10 Here are specimens of the then existing organisations:

The instrumental combinations agreed upon by the commission, were based upon Sax's ideas, and the fol­lowing organisations were admitted for the French Army under a decree dated July 31, 1845 :

2 Trumpets (Ordinary).
1 Small Clarinet in E flat.
4 Trumpets (Cylinders).
14 Clarinets, B flat.
2 Saxhorns, E flat.
2 Bass Clarinets, B flat.
7 Saxhorns, B flat.
2 Saxophones.
2 Saxhorns, A flat j instead of
2 Cornets (Cylinders).
2 Saxhorns, E flat 1 Horns.
" Spontini suggested a fine combination. It is given in Grove's "Dictionary" (article, Wind Band).
